Aikido for Ukraine
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia that was reported in February 2022, when aikido activities were halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, had a huge impact on me. I had been giving seminars in Moscow for over ten years and have many friends there. I have important friends who I consider to be my best friends, brothers, and family. Now that I think about it, I think there were some participants from Ukraine in the seminars. At that time, to me, Ukraine was one of the countries that separated from the Soviet Union.
In a scene from an anime I watched as a child, aliens attacked and all humanity united as Earth’s army. This is something like that. This invasion by a superpower occurred while we were facing corona, a threat to humanity that was common throughout the world.
At that time, I discovered the “Aikido for Ukraine” project on Facebook. My first thoughts were who is behind, working for what purpose, and how are they delivering the support? I’m sure there are some of you who are concerned about these things and may be hesitant to provide support.
Fortunately, as Ms. Jacqueline von Arb, whom I trust, is involved in this activity, so by donating a portion of the profits from the overseas seminars that resumed last year, I decided to help the children of Ukraine now and in the future.
Mr. Martin Frankovic, Ph.D. and Mr. Mikhail Rogach, who are leading this project, brought children from Ukraine to participate in my seminar in Slovakia in 2023. Being able to practice and talk directly with them gave me the opportunity to feel closer to the issue. At their request, I became an ambassador for this project.
Currently, there is little discussion of Ukraine in Japan, and I feel that the country is becoming more distant in Japan. I would be happy if I could help you contribute to the Ukrainian children’s future in this way, without causing more fire on the other side.
Through training, I have come to strongly believe that there is no “justice” in a fight, only “reasons” on both sides. In addition, the founder preached that “Aikido is the path to world peace.” This project focuses from the present to the future rather than directly aiding the fight, rather than forcing the cause of the fight on each other. That is the main reason for my cooperation.

コロナ禍で活動がままならない2022年2月に報じられたロシアによるウクライナ侵攻は大きな衝撃を私にもたらしました。十数年前からモスクワで講習会を行い、多くの友人がいます。親友とも兄弟とも家族とも思う大切な仲間がいます。講習会の中では、今思えばウクライナからの参加者もいたようです。その時の私には、ウクライナはソ連からロシアになり分かれて言った国々の一つでした。
子どもの頃に見たアニメの一場面で宇宙人が攻めてきて地球軍として全人類が一つになる。というものがありました。まさにコロナという世界共通の人類を脅かす存在と向き合っている中で起きた超大国による侵攻。
そのような時にfacebookで「Aikido for Ukraine」を発見しました。が誰がどのような目的で活動し、どのように支援を届けているのか。皆さんの中にもこのようなことが気になって支援をためらわれている人がいるのではないでしょうか。
幸い、私は信頼する、Jacqueline von Arb女史がこの活動に関わっているといことで昨年より再開した海外講習会での利益の一部を寄付しウクライナの子供たちの現在、未来を微力ですが支援しています。
2023年のスロバキアの講習会にはこの活動をリードしているMartin Frankovic,Ph.D.氏、Mikhail ROGACH氏がウクライナの子供たちを連れて参加をしてくれました。直接、彼らと稽古をし、話ができたことより問題を身近に感じる機会となり彼らの要請を受けこの活動のアンバサダーとなっています。
今、日本国内ではウクライナに関する報道は減り、ウクライナという国は遠い存在に日本ではなってきていると感じます。対岸の火事とはせずに子供たちの将来に皆さんの手を届かせる一助になれればと幸いです。
稽古を通し、戦いは双方に「理由」があるだけでそこに「正義」はないとの思いを強くしています。また、開祖が「合氣道は世界平和の道」と説かれています。この活動は、戦いの理由を押し付けあうのではなく、戦いの直接的な援助ではなく現在から未来に焦点を当てています。そこが私自身協力している大きなポイントです。
